I am pleased to announce the reprinting of "A Dialogue Between a Catholic Priest and a Protestant," by the Puritan Matthew Poole, who is much beloved and well known for his commentaries on the Bible. Poole was a 17th century English Puritan. He was also an apologist for the Protestant understanding of the Christian faith, and as such he wrote an important work he called “A Dialogue Between a Catholic Priest and a Protestant.”

Poole sets up the dialogue this way: Two old friends who have not seen each other since their school days meet again one day. One has become a Catholic priest and the other is a devout Protestant. They decide to get together and discuss their differences. So one day is given to the Catholic priest giving his criticisms of Protestantism, with the Protestant having a chance at rebuttal and cross-examination.

The next day the roles are reversed, and the Protestant can lay out his case against Romanism, which the priest having the opportunity to rebut and cross-examine. This is a good opportunity to sit in on a debate on the key issues such as Scripture versus tradition, transubstantiation, praying to saints, prayers for the dead, purgatory, indulgences, and the justification of a sinner, among many others.

There are many polemical books one can buy that present each side’s case, but I’ve never seen or read one where it is an actual back-and-forth, where both sides are presented. It is like watching a debate.

And Matthew Poole says in his introduction to the book that he has not set up the priest as a straw man with weak arguments, but has actually taken the Catholic position from official Romanist documents that have that Church’s imprimatur.

This book was last published in the 1800’s. We have retypeset it and updated the language slightly.

The retail price for this 168 page hardback book, printed on acid-free paper, is $16. Until June 1 it is available at the pre-publication price of $10, plus $5 shipping costs.
The book is expected to be ready to ship by June 1. After that date the price will go up.

To order, go to The Northampton Press.
