Does anyone know of a good (non-Bible) book that gives an overall presentation of Old Testament history? I mean, not a book so much strictly about the theology of the Old Testament but the history of everything that happened? I know that would be really helpful for me as I read the Old Testament in terms of knowing what happened when and what the context is socially, politically, religiously, etc. I feel like my whole understanding of OT history is fragmented from reading the historical introduction to each Bible book on its own, so I'm having trouble bringing all these histories together into one coherent story. Thanks!

Alfred Edersheim, Bible History, Old Testament will get you up to the exile.

I have found the 2001 edition of The Story of the Old Testament by Alec Motyer (revised by John Stott) beneficial in understanding biblical history. The maps and pictures are especially helpful.

Bethel's recommendation is also very excellent for an overview of (almost) every OT book.
