Let us imagine God’s scriptures as being a site where we want to build. Let us not be lazy, content with building on the surface; let us dig deep until we reach the rock; now the rock was Christ (1 Cor 10:4).

Augustine of Hippo, Homilies on the Gospel of John 1-40 (c. 406-20), trans. Edmund Hill, ed. Allan D. Fitzgerald, The Works of Saint Augustine: A Translation for the 21st Century, Volume 12 (Hyde Park NY: New City Press, 2009), 23.1, p. 405.

Reminds me what one of our congregants said once: that Scripture is the raw material on which we build our theology, and without which there are no materials to build with.
