In case you haven't seen this at the Banner of Truth website (www.banneroftruth.org, then click on "articles"), there's a new book out re-asserting the doctrine of penal substitution.
It's Pierced for Our Transgressions: Rediscovering the Glory of Penal Substitution by Steve Jeffrey, Mike Ovey, and Andrew Sach (Downers Grove: IVP, 2007). It's supposed to be out this month, and sets out to re-assert the biblical doctrine in the face of various denials of it these days.
Another excellent defense is an article by J. I. Packer, "What Did the Cross Achieve? The Logic of Penal Substitution" (originally published in 1974) now available in volume 1 of Packer's Collected Shorter Writings.
