What do you all know about the following works? Some of them have been reprinted recently; others have not been printed in quite some time. Have any of you used any of these? If so, what are your thoughts? I am probably going to be preaching through the Ten Commandments, so I am looking for the best commentaries upon the Decalogue.

  • Henry Ainsworth's Annotations on Exodus
  • John Calvin's Sermons on the Ten Commandments
  • John Dod's The Ten Commandments
  • James Durham's The Law Unsealed
  • Edward Elton's The Ten Commandments of God
  • Ezekiel Hopkins' Exposition of the Ten Commandments
  • John Lightfoot's Gleanings from Exodus
  • Simon Patrick's Exposition of the Ten Commandments and the Lord's Prayer
  • Patrick Symon's Commentary on Deuteronomy
  • Andrew Willet's Commentary on Exodus

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have Ainsworth's Annotations on the Pentateuch (Soli Deo Gloria, 1991), and I highly recommend it.

I also have Calvin's Sermons on Deuteronomy (Banner of Truth, 1987), which is good.

My pastor uses Andrew Willet's commentary on Exodus and thinks highly of it.

I highly recommend Matthew Henry and Matthew Poole (both his Annotations and his Synopsis). Also, the English and Dutch Annotations are helpful. I think all of the works you mentioned will be very good.

See also Spurgeon's guide to commentaries and Puritan & Reformed Sermons on Exodus.

Thanks guys!

I changed "unleashed" to "unsealed," though I must say that I like "unleashed" better. :)
