Hi, everyone,

My daughter turns 11 this week and is interested in acquiring a broader portfolio of music to listen to. (Most of the music she's been exposed to up until now is either VeggieTales, classical, or "contemporary worship.") I'm not super thrilled with "contemporary worship" even though it's better than other things that come to mind. Anyone have any great suggestions of what can pique the interest of such a girl? I'm only going to get so far on the classical front, I know, but any recommendations along the lines of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" and Handel's "Messiah" are welcome.

Thanks again!

I would teach her the Metrical Psalm tunes in four part harmony during your family devotions.

Chopin was the first of the classical music I sought out on my own (as opposed to what my family chose.) I loved the etudes and nocturnes especially. Forty years later, I still appreciate them but lean more to the Bach and baroque composers I "discovered" in the college library. Swing and some of the other mid-century jazz styles have cross-generation appeal.

Thanks, everyone! I'll go through these suggestions with my daughter. Much appreciated!

I am partial to the classic music from the 60's and 70's especially Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles.

Brother Tyson:

Why are you "only going to get so far on the classical front?" There's a world of wonderful music out there: one of God's greatest gifts to mankind.

Here is an article that I wrote, intended to serve as a primer for just this sort of question: http://www.opc.org/nh.html?article_id=844.

I am not suggesting that all of this music is age-appropriate for your daughter right now, but much of it is and will be increasingly so as she grows.

Peace,
Alan

Went to one of their concerts last Wednesday. They take old hymns and set them to contemporary-ish music.

These guys are great. They sing the Psalms.

Sons of Korah is my favorite group! Some day I hope to go to a concert of them. I tried to warm up the family for going to California for their next concert in February next year, but they weren't too thrilled... ;) It's not exactly around the corner... Search for them on YouTube, there's a lot out there so you can check them out before you buy their work.
