Q2. What rule hath God given to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him?
A. The Word of God, which is contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, is the only rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him.

The second question of the catechism directs us in how we may fulfil question one. The Word of God directs, instructs and points man how to honour God. Psalm 103:21 says, “Bless the LORD, all you His hosts, You who serve Him, doing His will.” God must reveal the rule of glorifying him. The Bible teaches us how to glorify him and honour him. The Christian should hold the Scriptures dear in his heart, mind and soul. Psalm 119:11 says, “Thy word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against Thee.” Without Scripture, we cannot know how to worship Him or serve Him faithfully.

We must read, understand, memorise, and obey Scripture. Having a good knowledge of key biblical doctrine is crucial to living a steadfast and honourable Christian life. Holy Writ is very important as God has revealed Himself through Scripture. Within the pages of the Bible, we learn what is right and wrong in the sight of God. Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

No other book on earth is like the Holy Bible. The 66 books of the Bible are the complete canon of God's truth declared to mankind. No other written material is from God. 2 Peter 1:21 says, “For no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” The will and mind of God can be known if we study, meditate, and believe what God has written in the Holy Bible.

Queen Victoria once said that the Bible is the reason for England's supremacy in the world. Queen Victoria proclaimed that the blessing on the nation of England was the result of her country’s faithfulness to the God of Holy Scripture. Proverbs 14:34 says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a disgrace to any people.” Another quote worthy of consideration is that of Victor Hugo, the French writer who said, “England has two books, the Bible and Shakespeare. England made Shakespeare, but the Bible made England.” “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance.” Psalm 33:12.

The Word of God is true in all that it confirms. What I mean by that statement is this. In Scripture, the words of the devil are recorded, for example in the account of Christ's temptation. The Bible records the words of the devil accurately, however, what the devil said was a lie. Another example is when King Herod ordered the deaths of children the Bible is not supporting his murderous agenda but records an event in history. Draw night unto God for he is the light we need in this darkened world of sin and sorrow. A real relationship with the living God is the only way to true and everlasting happiness and joy.
