The WSC says the Sabbath is to be sanctified "by a holy resting all that day, even from such worldly employments and recreations as are lawful on other days..." How does one prove exegetically that we aren't to partake in recreations (in addition to just work) on the Lord's Day?

The heart of the command, summarized in Westminster Chapter XXI is to "sabbath" (rest) from the ordinary work and recreation of the rest of the week in order to keep "holy" (set apart) the day for prioritizing worship- corporate, individual and family.

It's not about seeking entertainment or amusement for ourselves (which can be fine pursuit other times), but rest from even seeking that for ourselves.

Remember, the fourth commandment is not about us doing anything we personally find enjoyable (e.g. sports), but rather about preparing for a day that is unhindered, not distracted so one can worship, communion and fellowship with our God in a way not ordinarily possible the rest of the week.

(The other part of the command is to work six).

It is a great delight.
