What was the sermon text and topic preached at your church today? What gems were mined from the word of God from the pulpit?

I preached on John 6:41-50 and spoke of the crowds' resistance was demonstrated in three ways in the text: their opposition (John's use of "the Jews", their grumbling, and their reference to Jesus' parentage demonstrating this); their inability (Jesus points out that they have not been drawn by the Father as the reason they do not come to Him; the necessity of divine election in understanding the message preached to them); the message delivered to them (even though they misunderstand, Jesus repeats the gospel to them; that He is the bread of life and that all who come to Him will live, while those who do not will die).

Pastor provided an interesting interplay between 1 John 1 and John 20:19-31. Also as an aside noted while he likes Gordon Clark, Clark's commentary on 1 John left a lot to be desired.

At my church today, my pastor preached from Second Timothy chapter 2. The focus this morning was on the relationship between Timothy and Paul--they were like father and son even though there was no blood relationship between them. One of the things pointed out was that the church family should love like that of a family related by blood.

The exposition today focused primarily on verses 7-8, wherein the church is called to sobermindedness and sound judgment in the face of the realities of worldly opposition and of Christ's return in judgment on a world opposed to Him. The duties of prayer and the exercise of fervent love for the brethren, aided and grounded in the sober and sound perspective of the faithful, were also pressed upon us.

The sermon we heard this morning was similar, but was from Acts 13 and was regarding how the death and resurrection of Christ was actually the fulfillment of God's plan.

Focus was on how Paul calls the Church to be a place of love. Love begins with God and is a mark of God's people and His ministers. Our love is not to be static, or primarily arise from emotions (although it leads to proper emotions, such as Paul's "yearning" for the Philippians), rather it is to abound to overflowing and operate in the sphere of knowledge (based in Biblical truth) and discernment (with practical application of truth to circumstances). Such love affects our lives, showing the world that Christians are "for real," seeking the best things, living lives of personal integrity and relational integrity; all of which is the fruit of righteousness.

All of the preceding is the plan of the Lord, for the purpose of, and leading to, the praise and glory of God.

Esther 7 gives a good picture of how our faithful action occurs in the context of God's sovereignty in all things.

Our sermon this morning was based on Revelation 21 - the description of the New Jerusalem. The focus was on how the city does not have a temple because Christ Himself is the temple. There is no longer a need for a "most holy place" because all barriers between us and God will be gone (as a result of Christ's work on the cross), so that the entire city is His holy place. The key point is that knowing our future should drive us to honor God and obey Him in this life.
