By this standard, what was Calvin doing referencing Chrysostom, who denied election? By this standard, should Christians read secular philosophy? By this standard, shouldn't I just stick with the Bible given that all interpreters are fallible?
 
I think the point is well made if "eat the meat, leave the bones" is being used as an excuse for sitting week after week under someone who is mixing much erroneous material with the good, or if as immature Christians we are immersing ourselves in Christian literature that will less us astray.

The Christian who has become more discerning can sometimes learn much from unReformed works, although it's a pity, and can sometimes be an injudicious use of time to have to wade through acres of ding to find one diamond.
