Spurgeon wrote the Treasury of David, the definitive commentary on the Psalms. Available very cheaply at the Met Tab bookshop.

I'm not aware of any othr commentaries by Spurgeon. He was the Prince of Preachers, not the Prince of Commentators.
Do get his book on the Psalms though- it's great!

Well, let's give it its full original title:
The Treasury of David, Containing an Original Exposition of the Book of Psalms, a Collection of Illustrative Extracts from the Whole Range of Literature, a Series of Homiletical Hints Upon Almost Every Verse, and Lists of Writers Upon Each Psalm 7 volumes (London: Passmore & Alabaster, 1869-1885)
It's most readily available as a 3-volume set (containing, almost unabridged, the original 7 volumes) from Hendrickson Publishers. I say "almost unabridged" because Hendrickson does leave out the "lists of writers upon each psalm" presumably because the vast majority of Spurgeon's recommendations have long since been out of print.
But the commentary itself is complete. Probably one of the greatest devotional commentaries ever written.

Let me just add that, along with his massive commentary, Spurgeon preached no fewer than 445 sermons (by my actual count) from the Book of Psalms during his many years of ministry. The man was amazing...
Also, someone mentioned a commentary on Matthew: Spurgeon was working on a devotional commentary on that gospel when he died in 1892. It was completed by his wife and his private secretary, I believe, from his notes, and was published sometime after his death.

I have a book "twelve striking sermons" by Spurgeon and on the dust jacket there is a list of books that were printed at the time. It says there is a 4 volume treasury of the old testament and a 4 volume treasury of the new testament. Where can I get hold of these??
I know this is not a commentary, it says they are sermons but they sound great.

You'll probably have to look second-hand, or collect his sermons! Day One will soon be publishing a book of never before published sermons by CHS. I proofread them, and they are gems.

I have these two sets, packaged as 8 volumes in 4. The sets (both versions) were published by Zondervan, but have been out of print for some time. (The date on my set is 1968.)
All 8 volumes consist of 7,224 pages reproducing 2,600 of Spurgeon's sermons (out of a total sermon count of approximately 3,500). The sermons are all in biblical order, but are undated. I had to provide the dates myself. In my set, Volume 1 is Genesis through Psalm 111; Volume 2 is Psalm 112 through Malachi; Volume 3 is Matthew through Romans 3; and Volume 4 is Romans 4 through Revelation.
I got my set from a library that had a duplicate set. Got the whole thing for $40 - $10 per volume. The bargain of the century!

I believe the only two commentaries Spurgeon ever wrote were his Treasury of David and Matthew-the Gospel of the Kingdom. Matthew was Spurgeon's final work written over two winters whilst in the south of France. He died just after completion and his wife commented that much of it was "written on the very border land of heaven". Spurgeon died before he was able to revise what he had written and its final format was prepared by a close friend.
The edition I have is by Pligrim Publications dated 1978. I don't know whether it is still in print or not, but I find it a valuable commentary on Matthew's gospel

Yes. In the library of Spurgeon's college (now very broad evangelical, ordains women etc) - which used to be the PAstor's college.
Apparently the explanation is that (as you all know I'm sure) the sermons were published one a week, and this went on until some point during world war one, long after CHS died in 1892. THe publication of sermons did not stop because they run out, but because of severe rationing of paper due to the war effort.
Some time later, a single volume of remaining sermons was issued. However, there was still a slice of sermons left, and these are they. Some of them are pretty early ones, and some of them have a serious PUNCH!

Besides John Calvin who I now view as one of the greatest theologians in the history of Christianity I have come to greatly admire CH Spurgeon. I only became a Protestant in 2006 and was born again in the Reformed faith in 2007.I am now a Reformed Presbyterian Protestant however I was a Roman catholic. Spurgeon has helped me appreciate and find deeper meaning as to what it means to be a Protestant and how important the Protestant reformation was and continues to be in the 21st century.

My wife bought me an 19th century edition of Spurgeon's Expository Encyclopedia (20 volumes) published by the Presbyterian Board of Publication and Sabbath School Work. It is comprised mainly of his sermons loosely grouped into topics. But interspersed throughout are expositions of short passages of scripture and not all from the Psalms! They are wonderful to read but, maddeningly, the set has no index! The table of contents doesn't even include page numbers! Trying to find a particular exposition is literally like trying to find a needle in a 20 volume haystack. For example there is an exposition of Jer 9:1-26 immediately after his sermon, "God's People Melted And Tired" from Jer 9:7. But you don't know these things are there unless you read each volume cover to cover.

Don't bother buying it from Pilgrim, get it direct in the USA from Day One Publications. I proof read the volume last summer and I have a complimentary copy here now, it is great. Much easier to read than the old works.
