Thanksgiving Day Debate

I would love some response to some of this. I know that it wasn't the cute, cozy picture we were given as children. I also know that there were others involved other than just Puritans and Pilgrims. I also know that there were more complicated issues.

THE REAL STORY OF THANKSGIVING

The Great Thanksgiving Hoax - Richard J. Maybury - Mises Institute

The first set of articles seems as one sided as the "traditional" story.
Some, maybe even a lot might be true, but it seems to have a revisionist flavor.

On the other hand, events as the Mises article describes would not surprise me at all.

I've heard this "true" (the Mises article) story before. It is always used to give an "illustration" of how a socialistic economic approach failed and capitalism saved the economy of the first colony. It has been revived by Obama's election. I've wondered if it is really true or is it just as propagandized as the supposed "traditional" story.

Are there any original source documents that could give a more credible evidence as to the events that actually DID occur?

Were the earliest settlers to what would become the eastern colonies perfect? Um, no. Did they impose themselves on peace-loving people living in Eden? No, for the same reason the colonists were not perfect. Any history written without an appreciation for the fall is going to be way off.

The Westminster Confession called for days of thanksgiving as well as fasting -- both practices of the believing colonists. I don't think Thanksgiving became a regular annual holiday until when, Lincoln?

You really should read Of Plimouth Plantation. Where I went to school it was required. Original sources are best. The socialism / collectivism of first period of settlement was disastrous. It always is.
