According to the Westminster Larger Catechism, one of the duties required in the sixth commandment is "cheerfulness of spirit" (Q&A 135). This point needs to emphasised in the current climate when so many are giving into carnal fear and worldly anxiety. While the catechism is not condemning those with melancholic health conditions, "cheerfulness of spirit" is incongruous with living in a constant state of gloom. Nor is it consistent with living in a state of perpetual fear that the worst possible thing might happen to you. Such a mindset is both ungodly and foolish, and it is at odds with living a life of joy in the Lord.
