So apparently, one of the batteries was a dud. I changed the batteries for all of the alarms in our house. The alarm in the basement started beeping (intermittently) again while we were gone. Someone heard it and called the fire department. Since we weren't home, they "forcibly entered the home". (I'm not sure whether this means breaking the lock, breaking the door jamb, or what). There is irony written all over this.

1. The battery was approximately 3 hours old.
2. We have lived in the home (which is brand new) for about 3 weeks.
3. It chirped once while my wife was leaving the house. She called me and told me about it. I told her I would change the battery when I got home from work.
4. My grandfather-in-law is the chief of the fire department.

The joy of home ownership.

On the bright side, they changed the battery to the smoke detector again. :)
