Back to the OP, has anyone else here read this book and have any thoughts on it?
As I said before the hilarity ensured, it's one of the historical surveys I cited in my work on the subject. Another work is one by Nassbaum (spelling?; see my bit on American Presbyterianism and the celebration of xmas).

A little more context. It's written by a modern Princeton scholar and is not a defense of the Puritan position on holidays, but he does do a fair job representing the Puritan position from reading so far. It's mostly a historical survey that shows origins of holidays, religious and otherwise, and how they got transformed into the modern celebrations. It's a bit of a dense read and goes further into the details than sometimes is necessary for what I'm trying to get out of it, but I'm finding it very well done. I haven't finished it yet.
