Howdy there everybody,
I am very new to the Christian music scene. While I have been buying Christian Cd's for some time now I have always bought the bands that you can not really hear the lyrics. (Zao, Living Sacrifice, Extol, Immortal Souls... etc.)

I realize that music is quite lacking when one cannot understand the words, so I was hoping to find a few bands which I can understand. Thing is, I do not know of any like that. I know what alot of people listen to but I do not want the normally \'Christian\' music. I was hoping more along the lines for songs with a real theological message, or at least songs that are not heretical.

I am into all types of music. I tend to like acoustic music most though. Folk and things like that are swell as well... and Celtic is awesome if it has a lively pace.

So what do you all listen to?

Thanks much everybody,
Joshua

...and with regard to music being made today, you can hardly get any more sound than Derek Webb! Check out http://www.derekwebb.com and http://www.myspace.com/derekwebb

I'm completely with you on the folk and acoustic, which is what I listen to most by far. What are some of your favorite folk artists, classic and contemporary? Derek's music is great in that regard as well. And on another note, you might like Steven Delopoulos' music, which is brilliant folk with poetic lyrics and some Greek influence on some songs. Check out http://www.stevendelopoulos.com and http://www.myspace.com/stevendelopoulos to hear some of that.

I mentioned several Reformed and other Christian artists with great lyrics and great music here.

Thanks a ton Chris,
I will check out both of their sites. I see that Derek Webb was once in Caedmon's Call, I do enjoy their music. As for my favorites... well, I am looking for some. :)

Thanks a bunch guys, I will let you all know what I find.
Joshua

If you like Celtic type stuff, you could check out Michael Card. Especially his album Poiema. I've tried to attach a wma file with one track.

As for sound Christian music, I have found Stephen Curtis Chapman, Wes King and Michael Card to all be good.

EDIT: OK, that did not work, so here is a link to it on my website:

RE Michael Card & celtic style - try his Starkindler album. It's more re-done hymns than his own lyrics (which is what his other albums, including Poeima, are), but the whole album is in a more celtic style so you might like it. Scandalon's my favorite album of his, btw.

And ditto to the comments about Derek Webb & Jars of Clay! OC Supertones have good lyrics . . . I'm not sure what you'd think about them musically.

I think I have like 5 of the Supertones Cd's. They have great lyrics and the music is sweet too. But I find that I do not always wish to listen to the same style all the time. I guess I am starting to enjoy all types of musical genres, not just the 'cool' stuff. I reckon that is bound to happen.

I will be checking out Michael Card sometime tonight, thanks for your recommendation Fred.

Thank you all very much,
Joshua

Defenitely check out 'Iona' ... Their music is excellent!

BEAUTIFUL music!

I have 4 of their earlier CDs and have enjoyed them for many years.

I think this is their best album ...

I have a question.

What is everyones take on Michael W Smith?

I realize he is more charismatic but I have never heard anything bad about him and I know quite a few people who listen to his worship CD's

I don't trust him...I mean, the guy hasn't aged in like 20 years...there's something sinister about that, if you ask me. ;)

While I don't particularly enjoy his music, some of the lyrics he has are alright...overall, he's pretty superficial...that's to be expected.

Oh, look at him up close. He's aged. You just don't see it from camera distance or the stage.

Some of the best music, lyrically and melodicly, I've ever heard is being written by a young man in our congregation, Jeremy Mayfield (No, he doen't race cars.). He is one of the most gifted composers I've ever met. When we get some onto MP3 perhaps I can link them.

Michael W Smith?

Not if you're looking for "theologically sound music". (I can post some lyric examples if you want). Musically, there isn't a lot of his that I like, either. Some of that's personal taste. He does have a song or two that I do like - "I will lead you home", is the title, I think.
