May the spirit of our ancestors descend to their children, that if the contest must be entered on between the Church’s subjugation and the Church’s spiritual independence, we, on the glorious retrospect of their sufferings and their triumphs, may give back to our adversaries their own watchword, return their own battle cry that “what firmness has done before, it will do again.” …
