The more a Christian is emptied of himself, the more he is made sensible of his own weakness and worthlessness, and the more singly that he depends on the grace that is in Christ Jesus —the safer he is. We go forth to the combat in our own strength, and we are foiled; we repeat the attempt, and are again foiled. We are always forgetting the lesson, and need to be reminded of it, that our strength is weakness, and our wisdom folly, and that all our sufficiency is of God.

Thomas McCrie (the elder), ‘The Recovered Disciple’ in Sermons, ed. Thomas McCrie (the younger) (Edinburgh: William Blackwood, 1836), p. 297.
