C. Matthew McMahon

Christian Preacher
As Christians we often forget how important divine meditation is. Westminster Divine Edmund Calamy said of this work by Thomas White, it is “one of the best books we have on the subject.” So many professing Christians in both his day and ours neglect the Scriptural duty of divine meditation.

Instructions for the Art of Divine Meditation – by Thomas White (d. 1672)

Thomas White (d. 1672) was a Calvinistic Presbyterian divine and Reformed preacher of the Gospel.

White uses Psalm 1:2 as his primary text, “…and on his law doth he meditate day and night.” He gives an explanation of the words together with some short observations, and shows the nature, kinds, and differences of solemn, divine meditation. He clearly demonstrates that meditation is a duty, and then lays out directions, rules and preparations for mediation. He then gives the reader forty-six meditations to read, and then discusses rules given for meditating on scriptural passages. He ends the work with seven meditations on key doctrinal subjects like the mercies of God, sin, death, and the excellencies of Christ. This is a sanctifying and humbling work to teach God’s people how divine meditation is our duty.

Matthew, how does this compare with Thomas Watson's work on Meditation also at the Puritan Shop? Is it more comprehensive? Does it take a different angle? Thanks.

Every book we publish on their various topics takes different angles and a different slant on a particular subject. Watson and White come at the doctrine of divine meditation from different angels, but its like hearing a sermon on John 3:16 from 6 different puritans. They would all bring something to the table. And White had a series of meditations he places in the book, 50+, that deal with key Christian doctrines. From one page to several.

Personally, I think Christendom overall needs to read every book on Divine Meditation that we can put in print.

Thank you Matthew. Spiritual Mindedness by John Owen (Banner of Truth Puritan paperback) is another helpful work on meditation recently reprinted.
