I have a Maxtor BlackArmor drive that has hardware encryption built in and I love that if I ever lose that drive all my data is safe.
This freeware app will allow you to protect any drive.
I set it up for my USB thumb drive by creating a 13GB encrypted file container on the drive. I left a couple of GB free to be able to put a few apps on the unencrypted portion and the Truecrypt program in that partition. I can then mount the encryted file container and it treats that container as a logical drive on my USB thumb drive. I'm keeping all my personal files in that drive so, if it is lost, I have it all protected.
