Valley of Eden

Kyle Stratford

When after God had Adam formed,
Before the time when Eve was born,
When He would have him name the beasts
Within that garden to the east-
Then God did call upon the man
Who would be steward of His lands,
To venture to a valley low,
And see what Providence had sown-
The sun a-smiling in the mist
Revealed all that light would kiss.
And though it were the darker more,
The Lord walked with him, as before;
He pointed to a mountain high,
At which the gulch's end did lie,
And told him of a certain tree
With branches golden, heavenly,
Atop that lighted, fateful peak,
From which does life resound and speak-
And in that valley dimly lit,
The Lord instructed him to sit
And name the creatures which he saw,
To his unmitigated awe-
There pranced a thing with antlers tall,
Which sat beside a thing with paws-
And something crept up Adam's leg!
"How many more than I!" he said.
And God did laugh within Himself,
Was satisfied with His new realm,
Yet lurked there in the midst, unseen,
One who sharply disagreed.
Then Adam gave them all a name,
And God agreed with these the same.
Yet knew He of another one,
To which of yet a name had none-
A window of the sky did slip,
A drop upon his head did drip,
And though he knew not what it was,
Made Adam look away, above.
