... it is desirable in the present day that ministers of the gospel should acquire such a knowledge of patristic theology as may enable them intelligently to form and to vindicate sound views upon these subjects, and to take some part, according as they may be called upon, publicly or privately, in defending the truth of God from the assaults which, through the Fathers, have been directed against it.
