Don Corleone confesses to Cardinal Lamberto
"For centuries men in Europe have been surrounded by Christianity, but Christ has not penetrated. Christ doesn't live within them."
Roman Catholicism may not be Christianity, but the truth remains: Christ has not penetrated Europe.
I'm reading a book titled the Discovery of France, where that couldn't be seen clearer. The author cites many battles between French pays over "saints" and "virgins": idols of magic powers imbued with life. (Scraping the groin of one saint and drinking the admixture could open a barren womb.) Paganism was never lifted from Europe, and Christ never penetrated their hearts. Why?
