Philip Sampson's book 6 Modern Myths about Christianity and Western Civilization has a chapter devoted to the history of this.

The book is heavily researched and well documented. There were about 20 people put to death in Salem because of witchcraft, an event that made the surrounding towns and villages acutely aware of not walking down the same path. Sampson also contrasts the very small number of folks put to death for witchcraft by Christians with the huge numbers of people put to death under humanistic "utopian" regimes.
