Does anyone know of a good place to look for doing writing on the side? My wife and I could really use some extra money while she's in school, and I would love to write.

My main problem is that my degree is in English...not anything useful like journalism or technical writing. Also, it needs to be something I could simply put 10-15 hours into a week.

I would love to do literary stuff, but that takes time...I wouldn't mind pumping some stuff out for businesses, churches or non profits.

Any suggestions would be appreciated (unless they are cruel)!

Our daughter's degree is in English Communications and she just got hired by a local news paper. She only works Monday's and Tuesday's. She had a small portfolio that impressed them. I must humbly say that she is an excellent writer and it shows in her work!

Craig, I actually wouldn't be surprised if I find myself asking the same kinds of questions just a few years from now, since English is the closest thing Rhodes College offers to that which I'm looking for, since they don't offer journalism, communication studies or the like.

If you do a search for freelance writing, you may find some sites that can give you some ideas or opportunities. Here are two sites to check out:

Also, I don't think you should necessarily rule out technical writing. I work as a technical writer, though I don't have a degree in english or technical writing. I've worked with people who had english degrees and they seemed to do well. I don't know, though, about getting a technical writing job for 10-15 hours a week. Most are either full time or contract jobs (full time, but for a limited period).
