Friends,

As Scottish Church history is the most important strand of Church history, here is a collection of the major defenses of covenanting and literature surrounding the Indulgence controversy during the Era of Persecution (1661-1688).

Amongst other things, these writings defend armed civil resistance and (most fascinatingly) issues of church unity and degrees of separation. Writings from all sides are given in the Indulgence controversy so that one can trace who replied to whom, their counter-response, etc.

Read the reasons for those who accepted Indulgences, those who did not and would not commune with indulged ministers, and those who were against the Indulgence but thought it lawful to hear and commune with indulged ministers.

A brief introduction on the webpage gives the historical background.
