The usual texts in question for the subject of EP are, of course, Ephesians 5:19 and Colossians 3:16. However, in both cases, the surrounding encouragements are directives for daily life, not elements of corporate worship. (Obviously the attitudes described should be present in worship, but not only in worship.)
This is easily understood as an encouragement to sing as part of our daily life out of thankfulness. But how do we know that singing is supposed to be an element of Lord's Day worship?
(In other words, my inclination would be not to add manmade songs and instruments to Lord's Day worship, but to question why we sing any songs in it.)
