Chess is a sport, right?

Who can recommend a good general strategy book?

Depends on your playing level, but Yasser Seirawan has a very good
basic series. A little higher is The Amateur's Mind by Jerry Silman - it's
really VERY good for training thinking about tactics.

Don't neglect endgame strategy either... Pandolfini's Endgame Course is a good one for starters, and after that, Dvoretsky has a very fine book - or you can get Fundamental Chess Endings by Mueller and Lamprecht. Actually FCE is good at any level - starts off quite basic and I have been very much helped by that book...

I found these helpful as well. Highly recommended.

The PB should make an online chess game for members. there could be a link on the home page. "Puritan Chess"...
that way you can learn strategies the hard way.
:cheers2:

I used to love chess. Years ago I spent a whole summer trying to beat a friend of mine in the game. He decimated me every time. As the summer wore on, I eventually beat him. But after that I was so burned out on the game that I haven' t played but maybe one or two games in the years since then, those were with my wife, and I beat her both times. That said she kills me everytime in checkers.;)
