"Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature(KJV)(ASV,all creation)": What is the best meaning of firstborn in this passage? I imagine those of 4th century Arianism misunderstood this verse as Jehovah's Witnesses do. I think it suggests a position of authority. Since all things were delivered into hands. Are there other interpretations that maintain an Eternal Son?

Remember that in the same passage He is also called the "Firstborn from the dead". Obviously, this is an authoritative title, speaking of His position as the inheritor of all things, as the obedient Son of His Father, both of Whom are God.

Think of the 10th plague, and then think of the beginning of Exodus 13 and the blessings to the firstborn. And then think of Christ as the firstborn, and then think of how Christians are the firstborn by virtue of our union with Christ.
