Where do the damned go to just after their deaths, and how is this place different (if different) from Hell? How's Hell like? (please quote important passages and point me to the most relevant verses and chapters on this subject)

I'd say they go to hell after death. After the judgment when hell gives up her dead, they are then cast into the lake of fire.

Revelation 20:11-15
[SUP]11 [/SUP]And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
[SUP]12 [/SUP]And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
[SUP]13 [/SUP]And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
[SUP]14 [/SUP]And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
[SUP]15 [/SUP]And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Following up on what Chris said, WCF 32.1 describes the intermediate state of the damned by saying "the souls of the wicked are cast into hell." You may wish to check out the proof texts.

And the eternal state of the damned is described in WCF 33.2: "the wicked, who know not God, and obey not the gospel of Jesus Christ, shall be cast into eternal torments, and be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power." You may wish also to check out the corresponding proof texts.

Peace,
Alan
