DVD Recorders?

I am about to purchase a DVD recorder and want some advice. Any preferences on make? Does the - and + on DVD mean anything?

Get a dual layer recorer! If you don't you will have to open up any DVD you record and "shrink" it down before placing it on a DVD R. However, dual layer discs are very expensive at this point. three to four dollars per balnk DVD!

The - and + mean little except that some home DVD players will play one or both. Avoid DVD RAWM because no one uses that standard at all.

Are you going to back up DVD movies? Or are you just looking for the ability to record data discs?

My main use will be to record old movies on tv for later viewing. Do you have a recommendation on a certain brand?

A couple of months ago I talked to the A/V director at an EPC church where I was involved in the TV ministry for years. They had started recording the services directly to DVD and had such a high failure rate that they ended up getting and using 2 DVR's. I suggested it might be an overrun type of problem and that using a PC and record to the hard drive and then burn the DVD might help.

You might look at DVR's that include a hard drive so you can record to the hard drive and then burn the DVD from that.

Adam: I got a DVD recorder and dual layer. The dual layer disks I burn won't work on my DVD player. It will workl on my computer DVD player. Do have any insight into why that might be (sound like you are familiar with this stuff - I am not). Thanks
