I'm not bashing fundies. This reminds me of parts of my childhood and there were some charming moments.

What does 'sacred desk' mean?

I won't post a link because of the obvious second commandment violation, but Charles Stanley had a photograph commissioned where he was sitting at his desk preparing his sermon while a guy dressed up like Jesus was sitting on the edge of the desk. Somehow the fact that this was a photograph and not a painting makes it all the more tacky.

I've heard a lot of classical Reformed types refer to the pulpit as the "sacred desk." I've never heard a fundamentalist use the term, though.

An SBC pastor friend of mine is decidedly not Reformed, but frequently speaks of the pulpit as the sacred desk. I've heard other men use the term, but I didn't believe they really thought like that. My friend, however, believes it -- while we disagree on some theological conclusions, he labors to be a Christ-exalting expositor, and I am thankful for his efforts to be faithful in that regard.

And that picture is very funny.

The only two I didn't get were "sacred desk" and "apocryphal illustration." What is that, Jesus paintings?

apocryphal illustration is like the example of the father who is a bridge operator and his son was stuck on the bridge while a train was coming but he did something something and crushed his son but that let the people on the train live. See how that's like God or something.

Touching story, but almost certainly didn't happen. If it were me a lot of people would be swimming in the water.

Other probably apocryphal stories:

1) Darwin's death-bed conversion.
2) Hitler's death bed conversion*

*Contrary to popular belief he didn't die in Berlin but made it to South America. We say he died in Berlin because the Soviets (not notorious for truth-telling) found part of some dude's skull and said, "Here's Hitler."

Eew, why would the conversions of Darwin and Hitler encourage anybody in their religion? Two people whose names I can't live a week w/o hearing, and I don't want to hear them for an eternity!

I don't think he made any plans to escape except his own suicide, but he could be the Führer of the Mars, for all I care. What's certain to me, Hitler's the most traveled name in history after Jesus.
