My wife and I currently live in a townhouse that we may or may not live in come a year from now, or even 8 months.

That said, we'd like to do some planting this next week or so around our areas of the townhouse complex (which is not much). I'm interested in any ideas folks might have as I think there are some pretty successful green thumbs around here.

The front and backside of our townhouse is very shaded, albeit I think that the front gets some direct sunlight in the morning. The back porch is covered by a tree at all times. We live in Memphis, Tennessee, so I don't know if that helps any, but I know types of soil vary from area to area.

3 plastic plants, five kewl-looking rocks and a ceramic garden gnome (no relation).

I have been wanting to start up a gardening discussion here for a while.
In your setting you might really get a kick out of container gardening websites and there are some good youtube videos on gardening in 5 gallon buckets.
If you have as much as a four by four foot area you should read a book called Square Foot Gardening Mel Bartholomew or at least look here:
Welcome To My Garden! | Square Foot Gardening

And this stuff is kinda cool too:

Hosta likes shade and is a perennial, so whether you stay or not, it will add a little color. It is easily divided and replanted most months of the year except summer, so you might be able to find someone who has a larger plant ready to divide. No cost to you and healthy plants for both of you!

How many hours of morning sun does the one side get?

You might think about growing winter vegetables like: lettuce, kale, chard, etc. In the Pacific NW its hard to grow certain plants that need a lot of sunlight (due to our lack of it) so I try to grow things I know will do well with less sun and at cooler temperatures. Right now I am growing butter-lettuce and red leaf lettuce. My Wife and I live in a small one bedroom apartment that faces west (sun reaches our deck at around 11 am PST) and we have been finding ways of growing plants indoors and outdoors. I have also been thinking about implementing flourescent lamps for growing seedlings indoors because of how cold it can get (until summer weather comes around).

For what it's worth gardening takes patience, but the return on your efforts is worth it.
