Hamilton told the Oregonian newspaper in 2007 that he had questioned the existence of God since he was a teenager, when two friends — an Episcopalian and a Catholic — died from the explosion of a pipe bomb they were building, while a third — an atheist — escaped without a scratch.

So logical.

Perhaps the idea that God "protects" those who believe and not those who do not.

Well, the atheist WAS given more time to repent and believe...

There is nothing new under the sun.

That sounds like a theology of glory, to me. It is always well to remember that the Beloved Son in whom God was well pleased was flayed and crucified. We are to judge of God's favor by his word rather than by circumstances.

The unintended consequences of mainline (e.g., ABCUSA) thought lead in the direction of many cul de sacs. Autonomous reason, an over-emphasis upon free will, and a penchant for hitching one's wagon to the latest secular trend or fad has reduced liberal Baptists to a position of being little more than an anchronism. Although Hamilton did not end up an American Baptist, he started out as one. I'm not surprised, but it is terribly sad.

Maybe God was trying to say that Christians shouldn't be buiding pipe bombs.
