How often are churches planted?

In my ongoing research on the area in which we are planting a church, I was suprised to find out that the "newest" church in the community is around 20+ years old. I found this to be somewhat surprising, since in the area we used to live (also a growing area) there were several new churches that were being planted.

Does anyone know of any data on how often a new church pops up in the average community? I'd like to use this information as part of my presentation to perspective core group members.

Have you ever visited the Center for Missional Research? I just googled my way over to the site. They have some interesting statistics there, though I couldn't find anything yet that answered your question.
