You don't have to use sarcasm we understand the dilemma. All I can tell you brother. is don't go! it ain't worth it.

Your first mistake is in thinking that you might find something of worth at your local Christian book-store.........Get it online pal. Better product line and price!
 
I got my first OC Supertone CD for 9.99 (Loud and Clear)

And Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on the whole bible (Hard cover) for 14.99

Not bad huh?
 
When I walk into my Reformed pastor's study--- I took note that he was proping his monitor up with a book by a prof from Liberty where I went... I asked him is that the best use he get out of a book written by a Liberty U. professor.... He smiled.

Imgaine if Jesus walked into a Christian Merchandise Store and saw much of the refuse with his name on it. No doubt he would spend most of the day turning over the tables. I accidentally walked into Lifeway Christian Stores and Family Christian Stores and was reminded of why we havent experienced a Reformation in the last one hundred years.
 
I was at a Family Christian Stores just the other day, and while I expected most of it to be junk, I was admittedly surprised by this - they didn't even have a theology section!

My local Berean Christian Stores, on the other hand, was pleasantly surprising. While they have their load of junk as well, most of the books in the theology section were actually Reformed. Berkhof, Edwards, Sproul, Horton, even Owen!
 
our local store was started by my dh's great aunt, who gave it to her son, who sold it to someone, who bottomed out. Bought by a couple and someone else...sent all the good stuff to their discount outlet (where I knew the clerk and he gave me even bigger discounts. Owners had "personal issues" that I won't go into. Now there are no books on the shelfs except Bibles...the other shelves are EMPTY...a huge store with nothing but cards and Bibles...some charasmatic books (which they are also running out of)...oh and let's not forget the St Joseph statues that I know are now hidden in a drawer because of complaints...anyone want to sell their house?:banghead:

IF I ONLY HAD THE MONEY!!! I would open a new store.
And can you believe that the lady told me one day (when I was looking for HS materials) that they weren't selling them anymore because me and all my "little homeschool friends" don't buy enough there.

DH now calls it "Kingdom Junk"

What stunned me most about Family Christian Bookstores was walking in one day and seeing a giant wall of crucifixes...ugh.

I couldn't agree anymore. I asked a clerk at Lifeway "Way is this crap!?". I couldn't stand the garbage they sell. I hate modern day Christian bookstores.

Ask them to order Gary North books for you :lol:.

(*note: I didn't really say that to a clerk)
 
I went to Borders tonight not expecting to buy any Christian book and happened to find Volume 2 of Bavinck's Reformed Dogmatics. I was so surprised they had it I bought it even though I think I overpaid by $15.

Those implue purschases will get you everytime!! Was it on an endcap or in the action alley!! :lol:
 
you know I would rather goto borders than to the local christian bookstore. They may sell witchcraft side by side with Bibles in the religion section...but at least they are honest
 
Although I like going to bookstores...no doubt...however, I find the best deals online. I have to do some hunting, but at least I'm not driving from store to store. Still, there is something about holding a book in your hand.

I just can't buy a Bible online, at least not a really good one. I have to see it, feel it, smell it! :book2:

I was actually suprised this week. I went into Blessings which is by no means a store I like (I spend most my money at a local Christian store where the order people will bend over backwards to order in whatever I request and know me by name) but it's in the same parking lot as my work is and I had Christmas money. After some looking I came across Kuyper's "The work of The Holy Spirit" for $23 CDN. I picked it up and put it on the pile of stuff I have to read, should be interesting.

The one thing I have noticed is whenever I'm interested in a subject or author I will always seem to come across a book on it or by him....gotta love providance :)

My Mother gave me a gift certificate to Family Bookstores. I knew it would be bad, but it was much worse than I thought. I spent a good two hours in there and could find nothing I would want to buy. I asked the clerk if they had ANY Systematic Theology books (I might have even bought Chafer's just to use the certificate and get the heck out of there), but he said they "dont carry that kind of stuff."
The only thing good I could find was Matthew Henrys commentaries (which I already own) and one Sproul book. I finally settled on a new Bible for my youngest and a dictionary.
I thank God that we have a great Reformed owned bookstore here in San Diego called Evangelical Bookstore. I'm sure Paul Manata would agree with me.
