Joshua 5:13
KJV(i) 13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?

ECB(i) 13
YERICHO FALLS And so be it, as Yah Shua is by Yericho, he lifts his eyes and sees, and behold, a man standing opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Yah Shua goes to him, and says to him, Are you for us, or for our tribulators?

These are my thoughts.
In what we do we need to ask ourselves are we on God’s side because of this.

I don't understand your question. Nor am I familiar with the "ECB" translation. Sounds very literal but I'm not sure what relevance it has to what you're asking. Could you please clarify?

I don't think a main point of that verse is to show that Joshua (or we) should be on the Lord's side. Certainly we should, and the point can be drawn from the surrounding passage, but it's not what the question from Joshua chiefly shows us.

The fact that Joshua did not recognize the Commander seems significant mostly because it suggests that Joshua had not yet met him despite the fact that the Angel of Lord (I believe the Angel and the Commander are the same person) had been with the people since Egypt and Joshua had been a second-tier leader since those early days. Like Moses in Exodus 3, as the new top leader of God's people Joshua receives a personal calling and encouragement directly from the Lord. That's happening in Joshua 5.

What I find really fascinating is the Commander's response of "no" to Joshua's either/or question. But that is another topic...
