In Wilmington, NC, this guy who is proprietor of the Cape Fear Serpentairum is generally regarded as crazy. He has some of the most venomous snakes in the world in captivity; many of which he caught personally.

Snake Story 1
I taught in Swaziland from 1975 to 1977, at Mhlatane High School in the village of Piggs Peak.
I lived in a flat on the campus. The front door led out to a court that included the hostel (boys only), and the dining hall. We got firewood from a nearby lumber mill and used to stack it outside our flat.
One day I was on my way back to the flat from the last class and the boys were making their way to the dining hall. From a distance I noticed that there was a small jet of spray coming out from under the wood pile. I saw something move. Only one possibility - spitting cobra.
I spoke to one of the boys and in a split second it was all over the school. Guys went running in all directions and came back with spades, shovels, rakes, cultivators, anything they could get their hands on. They were used to doing this sort of thing out in the bush. They went after that thing with a vengeance. Quickly they managed to trap and kill that snake by beheading it.

Another time the boys chased a snake off campus. I happened to be in the path of that snake and it slithered right past my left shoe. It all happened so quickly it took time for the thought to process to realize what had just happened, then I got that feeling where your legs feel like they've turned to jelly.

One day I was off campus walking in the countryside. The campus was like 1/3 mile from what was the main drag in the village, so you didn't have to go very far in the opposite direction to be in the country.
The roads were dirt and gravel. In the distance I noticed something that looked like a fallen twig with a branch sticking up.
As I got closer I realized it was a snake but it was absolutely still. I got curious and very slowly took a couple of steps. I thought the thing was dead.
Then I saw the forked tongue. I took off with the burst of adrenalin that comes just before the legs turn to jelly. As I looked behind me this hood was beginning to spread ...

I used to be so afraid of snakes and insects that I couldn't even flip through a National Geographic or go anywhere near that section of a pet store. I was a very visceral reaction. It was something about the way they moved that just freaked me out.
I have since improved much by the grace of God.

On a serious side though...when a snake is leaving you alone and you stay out of its' way, there is no need to kill it. I am actually quite appalled at the "beheading" that was done. Why can't people just stay the heck away from something instead of killing them?
Also, the Bible doesn't say that an animal should be killed because it MAY hurt/kill someone. It says an animal should be killed if it KILLS a man. The proper thing to do would be to have an expert come in and take it away, or leave it alone until it left. Or just stay the heck away from it.
