[Living Sacrifice]

On Monday's "Renewing Your Mind" podcast, R. C. made a comment that he and his wife spent a few days praying through the night seeking God's guidance on a position he was to take teaching - or something to that effect anyway. I am just curious if anyone has ever spent that kind of time in prayer - and if so - how do you do it? What is the secret?

I do spend a lot of time with the Lord in prayer but I cannot see myself being able to do it continuously for hours on end though it is something I wish I could do.

Just curious to know what folks' thoughts or advice on this.

One example.

Take out your Bible in your prayer closet. Turn to the first Psalm below. Line by line as you read pray about the things therein and relate them to specifics in your own walk of faith. Do these same elaborations with each Psalm shown.

Psalm 145 - adoration
Psalm 51 - contrition
Psalm 138 - thanksgiving
Psalm 86 - supplication

Substitute your own passages as you are so provoked. As time passes you will no longer need to even do this, for your prayers will have become more and more substantive and meaningful.

The habit of prayer will also have you pausing often during the day, making mental notes, "this needs to be on my adoration list" "my contrition list", etc.

Prayer takes practice, the Spirit groaning for you when you are not yet able, but the habit will undoubtedly improve your prayer life.
