Puritan Board Freshman
Based on a lot of positive feedback for Bruce's commentary on Proverbs, I purchased the volume. I'm sorry I did that. His grouping of the proverbs together as a unit for a greater understanding is praiseworthy, but like all modern commentaries (that I'm aware of), it's pitiful in homiletics. Very little to challenge you spiritually on each page.
I find this to be the scourge of modern commentaries in general and the church overall. Maybe the two go hand in hand. I know I'm casting a wide net here, but I think this is true as a general whole.
I'm much rather read The Pulpit Commentary or a puritan sermon on a text - I'm challenged mightily.
Are there any modern commentaries that are strong in homiletics?
