Just grabbed this from the blog.

The story of the early years of the Holy Family is revealed through contemporary scientific discoveries and startling new evidence! Witness the birth of Christ and then follow Mary, Joseph and the newborn Jesus as they are forced to flee into Egypt to escape Herod s murderous decree. Real historical sites in Israel, Egypt and Jordan are the backdrop of this timeless tale of miracles and mystery. Visit actual sites in the Holy Land where astounding events still occur in the present day; the same places where Jesus performed miracles 2000 years ago. This is the definitive contemporary look at a miraculous journey and a life that would change the world forever.

:worms:

What concerns me here are the possible 3rd Commandment violations, as well as the 2nd.

"Scientific discoveries and contemporary new evidence", for example, combined with the usual modern skepticism makes for a witch's brew of potential 3rd Commandment issues such as misstating, misrepresenting, misinterpreting and so on.

?? There was a news story on New Zealand TV yesterday (Mary is played by a young New Zealand girl who is pregnant to her 19 year old boyfriend in real life and that is why she was busy and could not go to the Vatican to see the first showing) which said the movie ends after the arrival of the Three Wise Men and is filmed in Italy in the same place as the Passion. It did not say it was filmed in Israel. Maybe they used computer graphics to add imagery in or something from Israel. I have not heard anything about this claim.

Interesting quote

screenwriter Mike Rich told Plugged In Online, "If we can get viewers to go beyond Matthew's and Luke's early chapters, and maybe even get to the Gospel of John, then this movie will have served its purpose."

I honestly have no desire to see this movie... even if there weren't 2nd commandment issues. Nevertheless, that's an opinion that seems to totally floor my Christian friends. They just can't understand why I'd not choose to spend 8 bucks on a movie about Christ. (of course, I just can't understand why they don't consider the infallible Word enough of a description of the events of Christ's nativity.) The same people, naturally enough, don't understand why I won't buy a "Celebrate Christ's Birth at Christmas" lawn sign. I sometimes think they question my profession because of these things.

Anyone else with a similar experience?

I saw the movie this afternoon. I liked it. It was well done. If you believe it to be a violation of the 2nd commandment, then don't see it. Don't harm your conscience.

Watch the swearing in your trailer please!

21Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

22Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
24Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

28And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

29Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

30Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

32Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Could this be describing Hollywood and the whole entertainment industry, especially of the blasphemous variety like the movie here discussed?

No, it couldn't be describing Hollywood and the whole entertainment industry. Me thinks you have ripped Romans 1 to shreds.

The second commandment issues were enough for me. We don't really go to movies anyway, because there is so much chaff to sift through and because it would be expensive for all of us to go.

I agree with Tom Chantry's article and in my conscience, couldn't go see it. But I respect others' liberty to do so. :)

OH?

Is Romans 1 then not describing the state of man without God? And is Hollywood and the whole entertainment industry not a prime manifestation of reprobate man?

Film in and of itself is not evil, men can make perverse films certainly, like all businesses there can be questionable practices behind the scenes and since movies are a prevalent aspect of American and now world culture images can be used to promote revisionist histories. But to lump all of cinema and entertainment in this is fallacy. It is the arts, some of it high art and much of it pulp but uniquely human. Film is another manifestation of God given creativity and the pagan can make good film just as he has written great music, opera and sculpted and painted.

The believer too can enjoy the arts and use them to glorify God. Augustine's words to love God and do as you please hold true here.

I think we can error on the side of legalism when we start to condemn professions on account of generalizations, we all are sinners and we have perverted every practice. The most repulsive being what has been done in ministry.
