Thinking of starting a podcast

Hey folks, I'm thinking of starting a podcast.

But here's the catch - I'm not one of these guys thinking I need to prove how profound I can be, or try to impress folks with my sense of gravitas... nor am I wanting to act a fool.

Any suggestions for what my theme/primary subject should be?

For instance, should I just have a few beers and start commenting on whatever comes to mind?

Give me some suggestions... Oh, and I'd appreciate ideas for a name for my podcast. That would be helpful.

Yes, good suggestion. Focus on what you know the very best. The beauty of the internet and podcasting is that one has a good possibility to find specialty material and specialists to go along with it. How many military chaplains are reformed in their theology?

I've flirted with starting one, but I do not know how. My idea is to interview people who are in various parts of the Reformed faith. PCUSA, OPC, PCA, RPCNA, CRC, RCA, URC, ERQ, etc... And ask them about how they came to the reformed faith or how catechism was for them, various worship services, theological controversies and how it effects them, etc. Each would be 25 minutes to an hour and would let the person's words speak for themselves.

Nah... if I did that then sooner or later someone official would pick up on it and then I'd be censored to one degree or another. Forget that, man. Though, of course, I'd be happy to bring it up and talk about it from time to time.

But I know so much so well! I could competently carry on a conversation about BCS standings, good fishing spots in the area, the latest best seller, or politics or Dancing With the Stars, or Biblical Studies or Theology... Whatever, I've got it.

What are your hobbies? Aren't you a cigar smoker? I for one am always up for reviews of cigars, especially new cigars (since I have my favorites that I would rather stick to than change). (Plus it is a way to plug in and possibly get free samplers from cigar companies ... if you know how to do it.)

What about books? Beer? Topics that are brought up here on the PB? (You can host debating fractions and let them slug it out all at once ... none of this gimme three days to think and respond ... right now, on the spot EP debate, etc.)

Do you blog consistently? You get more feedback from a blog than you would from a podcast. Blogging is easier to set up than a podcast would be unless you have the equipment on your Army base. However, blog or Podcast, as long as you have something to say it will work.

The question you raised on what should be the subject or theme puzzles me. This is like someone saying they want to write a book, but don't know what it should be about. When my book came about, there was a enough input in my life and spiritual discovery to make it happen. However maybe brothers here know you well enough to suggest what to write about.

One thing to consider when starting a podcast is: Do my interests for podcast subjects intersect the population who are interested in those subjects? For example, you may really like fishing, but do most of the people who are interested in fishing A) know about podcasts? B) know how to operate podcasts? C) have the time to listen to podcasts? D) have the interest to listen to podcasts?

Some of those may be easily answered, some not so easily. I've been an avid podcast listener for a little while now, and nothing's more annoying than somebody having the technology to produce a podcast and not a single clue on the audience they're trying to reach.

To me, the best podcasts are done by people who are passionate about their subject matter, are interesting to listen to, and communicate what they want to say in a manner that holds my attention and entertains. If you want to seriously think about podcasting - and there is always room for fresh, new podcasts with unique visions! - I'd recommend checking out a few episodes of The Podcasting Advisor.
