Miami Plans Castro Death Party in Orange Bowl

With Fidel Castro seriously ill, the city of Miami is making plans to throw a party at the Orange Bowl when the Cuban president dies.
Look, it's not like I'm a fan of his or anything, and believe me, I'm quite well aware many, many Cuban expats have excellent and valid reason to loathe him, but still...throwing a celebratory bash when he's dead?

Human nature at its worst on display.

Yes and no, these people are legacy to his tyranny and they want to pop the cork on his demise.

Some Brits think the 4th of July is tacky, sore losers, just kidding.

I wouldn't personally participate in the festivities celebrating his arrival into eternity but I can understand the desire to vent.

I betcha' Cubans in the motherland are tempted to take to the streets upon his dirt nap as well.

I suppose I can understand the desire to vent, but "venting" by its nature implies spontaneity, does it not?

There's a difference, surely, between a spontaneous response upon those afflicted learning of the death of a tyrant, and hiring a party planner and reserving the Orange Bowl ahead of time.

God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked (Ezekiel 18), but us....?

To them it is a victory parade. We do take pleasure in the demise of the wicked, if Bin Laden turns up as a corpse Americans will have barbeques as well.

No, not yet. But the reports of his ill health are apparently sending the party committee into overtime.

Huge bashes in the Orange Bowl don't get pulled together overnight, y'know.

I dunno. I mean, let's face it....given enough time, everyone dies.

Can't say I'd ever thought of outliving someone as a victory over them.

Is anything going to effectively change in Cuba, though? From what I understand, Fidel's brother's been running it for a goodish while now, and is expected to continue once Fidel's dead.

If something were going to change, if it was truly comparable to "Ding dong, the witch is dead!" so that those who had been bound are now free, one could see them celebrating their freedom, but if it's going to be same-old, same-old, it seems to be very human to revel in his death, granted, but the ugly, fallen side of human.

Bay of Pigs II, I don't know, maybe there is a sense that Raul will be politically weakened and that an uprising could succeed. Raul is pretty old himself.

Mind, I'm personally hoping Fidel's death will lead to the opening of Cuba to cruise ships.

I'd love to visit Cuba. Supposed to be a beautiful, beautiful island.

But I still think an American city planning a death party is creepy.

Yeah, but Castro forced many of them to seek refuge here, thousands were political enemies exiled here during the Carter years.

At the edge of the Red Sea the Hebrews sang a happy song as they watched the Egyptian army drown..."horse and rider he has thrown into the sea..."

In Revelation the saints will sing a similar song over the destruction of Babylon the great.

It appears Biblical to rejoice even over the death of tyrants.

So the city of Miami planning a gala festival in anticipation of Castro's death, up to and including musical entertainment and T-shirts, is seen by everyone else here as admirable?

Huh.

I knew I was out of step with most other people, but clearly I'm more out of step than I'd realized.

Okay, a friend of mine came up with a valid reason

"Controlling the expected chaos".

Better to provide a place for all heck to break loose as opposed to having who-knows-how-many Cubans and their family and friends running amok in the streets of Miami when Fidel bites the dust.

Much as it causes me intense pain and suffering, I do try to be fair, so will acknowledge that reason has merit.

:duh:

Anne, I do agree that it is tacky. But then, not everyone follow the same social rules. And if it were myself, having been kept from my family and homeland by a ruling tyrant that has done Lord knows what to the people I care for....well, I don't know how I would react. Dancing in the street with others would be a possibility. Americans have been known to do the same or similar.

Controlling chaos does sound like a valid concern. No doubt their will be many emotions vented on that day by those effected by Castro's reign. Better to plan for it I guess than have no clue how to handle the situation when it does occur. Still...... to me anytime one departs this life to face judgment should be a sobering time for all of us. Granted only God knows Castro's heart but as far as I can tell, Castro will be departing into Hell. That should be a sobering thought for anyone since we all deserve Hell in the first place.

I have the same feelings when I hear about justly convicted criminals being executed. As much as I do agree the death penalty is valid, we should not be feeling giddyness when it occurs but should be reflecting on our own wretchedness and realizing that,"There but for the grace of Almighty God go I."

Actually, I can understand and sympathize with the individuals (though cheering when someone dies still doesn't hit me as likely to push one's sanctification in the preferred direction); my dismay had, in general, been more directed toward the idea of an American city playing host to such an event.

I read this morning that the primary mover and planner of it was himself appalled to find it being referred to as a "death party", and made plain that was NOT what its purpose was, instead being an attempt to keep the city of Miami from running amok.

That made me feel better. ;^)

It was the whole "The city of Miami's having a Death Party!" angle that flicked me on the raw.

True, makes more sense for it to be spontaneous on a personal level....not a city planned event...particularly in relation to the Orange Bowl.

Oh, well said. ;^)
