Can anyone recommend any good resources on types of heaven in the Bible? For example, how is Caanan a type of heaven?

Tighten this up, Scott....

"heaven" is actually the dwelling place (temple) of God (as you know.) So it's better to think of what God did in Canaan as establishing His dwelling (intermittently and imperfectly) place with men by ordaining the ark; tent of meeting; temple, Etc. Sin always imposed barriers; however, God unfolded and imposed solutions for man to endure His visits. Go back further though....

The Garden of Eden was the first "temple"....start there, because the types progress and repeat throughout the OT up to Christ's first Advent. (talk about climaxing drama!)

What I'm getting at is, try not to yank-out various types out of context. Start from the first type and follow along in progression. From Genesis through to Malachi. By then when Matthew speaks, the stage has been "set" by the Great Author of the Story!

Remember, the Story is an epic!!!

The story of Joseph.
He is 'killed' by His own.
He goes to Egypt (heaven) and becomes the number two there.
His own do not recognize Him. He gives them bread.
He reveals Himself to them; they come to dwell with Him where He is.

The book of Genesis is a synopsis of world history as is the first 7 chapters.

The book on the temple looks great. Any other recommendations for books on typology? Who is Beale?

Professor of NT at Wheaton College Graduate School. He has a massive commentary on Revelation (Eerdmans) and a shorter one on 1 and 2 Thess. (IVP). He edited The Right Doctrine from the Wrong Text? (Baker) many years ago. He has many journal articles. I think he has a NT Theology coming out in the next year or so. LAst I heard he belonged to a small denomination in the North East that holds to the Savoy Declaration.
