It was remarkably insightful, especially being raised in a household where both parents insisted I call them by their first names from my childhood. I was raised to be polite, but sir and ma'am and addressing people by last name is hard for me.

It's the same reason that it irks me so that people are so casual to refer to people in Elected Office by their last name. It shows no respect.
