The increasingly deadly heatwaves

It also depends on the affected region. Spain is more used to high temperatures than The Netherlands, for example. That means infrastructure and culture are more adapted. Think of siesta and dining late, as well as building homes with small windows and thick walls. In contrast, The Netherlands are more adapted to cold and rain. We build with large windows, isolation to keep the heat in our homes and quick drainage of rain water. During a heat wave, this leads to hot homes and drought. Meanwhile, we don't hold siesta, schools often don't have AC and so on. This means a heat wave has a greater impact on the Dutch society than on Spanish society (assuming equal temperatures).

but when a stressed grid comes, then it becomes simply good governance or even bare necessity.
Well, the stressed grid isn't caused by heat, it is caused by shutting down perfectly good power plants with high reliability when properly maintained, and replacing them with sources that depend on the wind blowing at a narrow range of speed, or the sun shining or the sun being blocked by rain clouds. The Texas grid does seem to be working better since they got the out-of-staters and the European off the managing board.
It's not brand new, but it has dramatically escalated over the last 25-30 years.
You probably need to go back and look at newspapers in the lead up to the Spanish-American war. What changed wasn't that news coverage has gotten more sensationalistic, it's that diversity in bias has almost completely disappeared.

That doesn't negate the fact that in my lifetime, there has been a trend toward more persistent and melodramatic sensationalizing of every little news story that comes our way, coupled with the advent of the 24-hour news cycle. I'm sure that the destruction of USS Maine made headlines - I'm not sure that's analogous to the extensive coverage given to every squall, potential tropical cyclone, and heat wave, reaching into our pockets so that we can fixate on it every moment of every day.

No argument there about wind especially compared to nuclear or gas plants. Solar and wind are not bad to have as supplements but without some kind of storage to smooth it out, it's a very poor substitute.

My comment was that political misconduct before the temperature extremes happen forces the situation in the present tense [of that particular situation] to become one of rationing when it should simply be a high usage day with proper planning.

You missed the point. Newspaper publishers stirred up war fever.

Some of the same in the lead up to US entry into World War I and less effectively World War II.

What is different these days is not the efforts of the propagandists, it is the suppression of opposing viewpoints on issues like Covid response and so called 'Global Warming".

I didn't miss the point. What you're talking about is the sensationalizing of major world events for the purpose of manipulating public opinion on a large scale. I didn't, and don't, disagree with you on that point.

What I'm talking about is the constant melodramatic hyping of everything. We live in a world of constant superlative and hyperbole, and that unquenched stream of amped-up rhetoric is now in our pockets and on screens being blasted into our eyes and ears 24/7/365. That's new.

Journalistic axioms:

If it bleeds, it leads.

Importance of a story -
One dead locally = 100 dead in Europe = 1000 dead in Asia

I do think one small but not insignificant difference is that energy efficient buildings become quite nasty and even dangerous when the air conditioning is out in a way that open windows and ventilate homes are not. They presuppose and even require AC to some degree due to keeping the interior temperature in, whether that temperature is high or low. This is of course a good advantage in a cold winter.

I also look annoyedly at new construction that does not have or have plans for ceiling fans because it's fragile to energy shocks in a way older homes or other buildings are not.

Hello Ed, how does your AI Genimi genie interpret the Scripture at Revelation 16:8-9, "Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory."

Rev 16 deals with the bowl (or vial) judgments, which culminate in "the battle of that great day of God Almighty", and Armageddon (Rev 16:16). I prefer the Spirit of God (Who indwells and illumines His saints) to the AI genies.

Records are being broken worldwide, year by year, and yet your genie downplays it. The "history guy" the same.

These earlier recorded heatwaves – as great as they might have been – were both anomalies, and local. What we are seeing now is a contemporary worldwide ongoing phenomenon, increasing in intensity. Whatever the conjectured causes, i.e., man-made or not, that remains debatable for the moment, though its increasing intensity will soon make it clear it is from God. In Rev 16:9 it was clear even to the "earth-dwellers" it was of God, "And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory"

I'm not sure if they know it's from God. How many do not say 'd*mn it, it's hot!'? Place the Lord's Name in front of that and you'll hear that said often during a heat wave. Scripture would surely call that blasphemy.

Nor did the Samaritans escape their share of misfortunes at this time; for they assembled themselves together upon file mountain called Gerizzim, which is with them a holy mountain, and there they remained; which collection of theirs, as well as the courageous minds they showed, could not but threaten somewhat of war; nor were they rendered wiser by the miseries that had come upon their neighboring cities. They also, notwithstanding the great success the Romans had, marched on in an unreasonable manner, depending on their own weakness, and were disposed for any tumult upon its first appearance. Vespasian therefore thought it best to prevent their motions, and to cut off the foundation of their attempts. For although all Samaria had ever garrisons settled among them, yet did the number of those that were come to Mount Gerizzim, and their conspiracy together, give ground for fear what they would be at; he therefore sent I thither Cerealis, the commander of the fifth legion, with six hundred horsemen, and three thousand footmen, who did not think it safe to go up to the mountain, and give them battle, because many of the enemy were on the higher part of the ground; so he encompassed all the lower part of the mountain with his army, and watched them all that day. Now it happened that the Samaritans, who were now destitute of water, were inflamed with a violent heat, (for it was summer time, and the multitude had not provided themselves with necessaries,) insomuch that some of them died that very day with heat, while others of them preferred slavery before such a death as that was, and fled to the Romans; by whom Cerealis understood that those which still staid there were very much broken by their misfortunes. So he went up to the mountain, and having placed his forces round about the enemy, he, in the first place, exhorted them to take the security of his right hand, and come to terms with him, and thereby save themselves; and assured them, that if they would lay down their arms, he would secure them from any harm; but when he could not prevail with them, he fell upon them and slew them all, being in number eleven thousand and six hundred. This was done on the twenty-seventh day of the month Desius [Sivan]. And these were the calamities that befell the Samaritans at this time.
Josephus, The Jewish Wars 3.7.32

Simon Kistemaker, who wrote the Commentary on Revelation after Wm. Hendriksen died (New Testament Commentary series), says this on Rev. 16:9:

'Observing the result of the affliction, John reports that unbelievers “blasphemed the name of God, who has the authority over these plagues” (compare Isa. 52:5). These people are the followers of the Antichrist, who himself blasphemes God and slanders his name and dwelling place and those who reside in heaven (Rev. 13:6). They fully know that God has the power to inflict these plagues on them, but instead of repenting of their evil ways they blaspheme him. This shows that they are completely in the power of the evil one and are unable to break away.' [emphasis added]
