As of Friday evening I am officially a member of Triangle Reformed Presbyterian Church in Durham, NC!

Finally, after about three years of being a Christian, I have this status. I was never taught about the importance of church membership at the churches I was visiting during my senior year of high school and freshman and sophomore years of college. Luckily, I became quite convicted after I started visiting Reformed churches about 6 months ago and I am now an official member who is excited about growing and serving with my local church family!

not only is what you did by committing yourself to a local church a good thing.
but from this post, we can see that your attitude is likewise, a good thing.

There was a time when I believed that membership per se in a local church was unnessesary - even a means of bondage (this was shortly after having fled from the charismatic movement - you can sorta understand what I mean by bondage).

Alan Morrison (diakrisis.com) wrote a very popular article called The New Diaspora in which he claims that God has forsaken "the organized church" and that the true people of God are being called out of it. That became my position for awhile because that's what I wanted to believe - I could justify quitting church altogether by claiming, "I'm just abandoning what God has abandoned."

But in fact, Morrison, Harold Camping, and others who are making these absurd claims that God has judged the visible church and is calling His true children out of her, make a completely unbiblical argument. It's amazing that I was ever willing to seriously examine this issue at all - let alone end up joining a church! But by God's grace I was driven to His word to learn the truth about the visible church. I wrote a li'l summary of that study called the Government of God which you can find here. It is meant to help "refugees" who follow Morrison and Camping into lawlessness. Enjoy!

Good for you brother. I know how it feels this Christmas was my one year anniversary at providence. As you know Church membership is NOT an option as some think, but rather a biblical mandate. Congratulations.

Sorry, but it is a gross misrepresentation of Alan M to lump him in with a person like Camping, and it is also a gross misrepresentation of his article.

What he does claim is that it is understandable that many people are without churches because there are so few good ones, and a great deal of spiritual abuse within even those that are doctrinally sound, and he is correct. He writes from a particularly European perspective. In England there are whole towns and areas without good churches and people meeting in ones and twos, or even alone. That is what his article reflects and he in no way encourages ppl to leave churches like Camping does.

Perhaps so. I read his article years ago (and from my Southern American point of view) right at a time in my life when I was overreacting to just about everything. I cannot find the article on the 'net anymore to re-read it with more mature and compassionate eyes. I regret unfairly lumping Mr Morrison in with Harold Camping and others who reject ecclisiastical authority.
