"Taking a step back and looking at the Big Picture, it is hard not to miss the fact that events are developing in concert with the ancient prophecies of Scripture. [emphasis added]"

Unless I'm reading him wrong I'd have to say that I agree with this sentence.

 Touche!

BTW, when I saw the thread title I thought it was about HAL the computer.

Be careful of falling for this mind set. Every generation for the last 2000 years could have read events around them the same way. In my opinion today is no different. :2cents:

Bruce, you missed the subtle double negative that Scott identified: "hard Not to miss" means "easy to miss."

Got you, sure did. Thanks

This is a mere curiosity from 2001 Space Oddity,

try to replace each letter of HAL for each following letter of the alphabet… IBM

Hmmm...zero hour was approaching (on us) by Hal in the late 70's then the mid-80's, the early 90's, 2003 (for some reason), am I missing any........:detective:

I think it will be a odd experience for him if he is lying on his death bed and Jesus hasn't raptured him up. He's been saying this is the time for over twenty years. One of my favorite books, although not by him, but in the genre, is 88 reasons why the rapture will occur in 1988. How many times can people sell their stuff and wait on the mountain top?

88 Reasons -- that would be Edgar Whisenant. I believe that after 1988 came and went, he reedited the book and more copies were sold (I guess with a different title) in 1989.

Here's the Wiki entry for him:

Edgar C. Whisenant (September 25, 1932 – May 16, 2001), a former NASA engineer and Bible student, who predicted the Rapture would occur in 1988, sometime between Sept. 11 and Sept. 13. He published two books about this: 88 Reasons Why the Rapture Could Be in 1988 and On Borrowed Time. Eventually, 300,000 copies of 88 Reasons were mailed free of charge to ministers across America, and 4.5 million copies were sold in bookstores and elsewhere. Whisenant was quoted as saying "Only if the Bible is in error am I wrong; and I say that to every preacher in town," and "f there were a king in this country and I could gamble with my life, I would stake my life on Rosh Hashana 88."

Whisenant's predictions were taken seriously in some parts of the evangelical Christian community. As the great day approached, regular programming on the Christian Trinity Broadcast Network (TBN) was interrupted to provide special instructions on preparing for the Rapture.

When the predicted Rapture failed to occur, Whisenant followed up with later books with predictions for various dates in 1989, 1993, and 1994. These books did not sell in quantity. Whisenant continued to issue various Rapture predictions through 1997, but gathered little attention.

There's also this about Whisenant:

After his "few weeks" had transpired, Whisenant finally saw his error. He claimed that he had made a slight miscalculation of one year because of a fluke in the Gregorian calendar. Jesus was actually going to return during Rosh Hashanah of 1989! Whisenant published his discovery in The Final Shout--Rapture Report 1989. "The time is short," he said. "Everything points to it." This publication was subsequently retitled The Final Shout--Rapture Report 1990 and has since been re-titled yearly as The Final Shout--Rapture Report 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 and so on. He continues to revise his date annually.

Right now in my life, I sure could go for that Rapture thing. The great thing, though, since I left dispensationalism so many years ago, is that being included in the Rapture is based upon being regenerated and not belief in the Rapture! So, my bases are covered.

Funny you guys should talk about 2001, I did a brief presentation on the book in a class of mine today... The "Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite" is bliss in the film (probably the only part I like, now that I look back on it) but pure torture in the novel...

Hamas continues to attack Israel with rocket attacks for the sheer joy of the violence of it all. Related to this, the Prophet Obadiah pronounced this verdict against Edom, who is one of the forefathers of the people of Hamas, saying, "Because of violence to your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame, and you will be cut off forever." Interestingly, the word translated as "violence" in this Scripture is the Hebrew word, chamac, pronounced "hamas."

Is that even true?

According to my Strong's Notes in e-Sword, it's pronounced khaw-mawce'.

So unless that's how you pronounce Hamas(not how I pronounce it) then no.

Hal Lindsey - every time that dude writes a book (gotta keep all those alimony checks to all those multiple ex-wives funded!) he sets back the serious study of prophecy 20 years...

I get a little sad when he does a book. My Father-in-Law reads his stuff, I think he (my pop-in-law) is a genuine Christian but sadly a lot of good Christians get his stuff, it really is a pity. I cannot say Hal is a "good writer" but I concede that he works with an effective emotional appeal. This it what lures a lot of people.:(

You do pronounce the word in Hebrew with the "kh" sound, which is kind of like the G in Dutch, or ch "loch" in Scots etc....

Some neonazis point out that the Space Shuttle Columbia went down over Palestine, Texas, and a Jew who bombed a French built reactor in Iraq killing several civilians was on board, and that is strong evidence that God punished the Columbia for the way Jews treat Palestinians.

There is another thread currently active where those sorts of explanations of God's providence in history are being used.

My wife has been having some dreams lately. I think I'll make them into a sermon series and get my friend Cyrus to incorporate the footnotes from it into a new study Bible. Then I'll get some other people to print some more books on theories that cram my footnotes into prophetic time lines to fund my retirement. Naaah, no one will ever buy it.
