Lucid Dreaming

I had a lucid dream recently. Not sure how it came about but I've had them a couple times before, though it has been a long while.

Anyone else here experience these? Don't worry, I'm not catching the pentecostal or anything and don't plan of prophesying anything in the near future.

Well, coincidentally I am off to bed right now and I suppose that's why it's on my mind at the moment. If anyone replies I'll catch up tomorrow.

You mean dreams in which you are aware you are dreaming? I have them all the time. Just last night I dreamed about a hungry white chicken dancing by the door wanting to be let out like a dog. Then I reminded myself I had had the same dream a year ago before I killed all our chickens for the freezer. I told the chicken it was already eaten, and it disappeared.

And, I'm sure, Carl Jung would have had a lot to say about that.

While I was in the hospital recovering from surgery, under some real good painkillers - I dreamt that reality as I know it - is not real, and now that I knew this - I had some sort of new purpose and then I woke up and kept asking what my purpose was... freaked my wife out something fierce...

:)

Yes, throughout my whole life. I find them fascinating. I still remember very clearly many dreams I had when I was 4.

I got some medication last year that had me sleeping more soundly than for quite a while. Either I began dreaming more than before, or maybe I just began to remember them - either way I was quite surprised to find how often in my dreams I was back in my childhood home, and my mother still alive. It's a long time now since that was the case! But in the dream I always knew it wasn't really so - a bit like when Captain picard got into the nexus. On the whole I think non-lucid dreams are more fun (unless they're nightmares). With the lucid kind it's as if you're swimming with one foot on the bottom

Once in my life I've had a dream that I could not distinguish from reality. It was absolutely horrifying! That dream was clearly from God, and it made me realize the falsehood of my faith in Christ. Later on it also made me realize the truthfulness behind C.S. Lewis' words, “You never know how much you really believe anything until its truth or falsehood becomes a matter of life and death to you.”

I have them all the time. Mine used to be horrifying, even as a young girl, too horrifying to talk about. I still remember them vividly. In the last few years, they have become more suspense and less horror, peppered with a few mildly amusing dreams.

I remember waking from some dreams and going to sleep next to my little brother's bed because I thought he was dead.

and kept asking what my purpose

Don't worry - it's probably just a government brainwashing experiment. One day you'll get a call, hear the code word....

At least that's the way it works in the movies.

Better than Freud.

I have a couple times. I've heard you're supposed to be able to control your dreams once you realize that they're dreams, so I tried to use telekinesis, but it invariably either didn't work or didn't work well enough. :)

Yes, just to clarify, by "lucid dreaming" I mean dreams where you become totally aware that you are dreaming and can then manipulate the dream at will.

I did not experience one last night and I couldn't say when I might have another, but I did do some reading on the subject and apparently many people pursue this sort of thing. There are all sorts of instructions available around how to prepare and practice for having lucid dreams. Not sure how healthy it would be to be obsessively seeking this all the time. But anyhow, they are indeed fascinating experiences.

Ah, so you meant "rational" rather than "clear and intelligible." I have had many of the latter, but only once do I remember the former (where I could reason within my dream and control my actions).

I had my first one the other night that I was able to control. I dreamt I was driving and I parked my car to run in somewhere on some errand, and when I came out I could not find the car. So I walked up to a car that resembled mine and morphed it into mine and got in and drove away!! :) It was wild because I totally knew I was dreaming and was experiencing frustration at not being able to find the car... So I just made a car and drove away! I hope I have more of those

The control part is fun, but then after a short while you wake up. Me, as soon as I realize I'm dreaming start flying around. I'm sure it's symbolic of my dissatisfaction of my super boring life.

I LOVE THOSE DREAMS!!!!!!

And hate them.

I used to have them quite often. They were so cool.

Because I would realize it was a dream. And I was in complete control..

Some scary thing was chasing me, and I was like "wait a minute, this is a dream".

And bam. He was gone.

So does that mean he's part of a "sleeper" cell now?! :D

LOL... :)
Yeah, I think it is the painkillers that are doing it... but I have always been an active dreamer. I was watching a special on National Geographic on the horrors of Meth and then I took a nap and wouldn't you know it I was in a town under attach by Meth tweakers... :)

Hopefully as I recover from this surgery... I will be less apt to some crazy dreams.

I have had these types of dream in the past. They are a bit bizarre, like I'm an actor starring in my own movie. More frequently though I have dreams that are very vivid and when I wake up I think they were real. Realizing that they were just a dream is a none too pleasant experience.
I also used to have a recurring nightmare, which would come about periodically. But praise God, I have not had that one for almost two years.

when my children were tiny I had the kind I expect a lot of mothers do - I would dream I lost them somehow and I would be going frantic searching. Those dreams were NEVER lucid, always totally convincing, btu then when I woke up and realised they were actually safe, it was the most blissful feeling in the entire universe :)

Two guys from church told me their wives often have dreams where they do her wrong. Yesterday the music director told me his wife slapped him once after waking up.

Whenever that happens to me I pull a little top out of my pocket and spin it to make sure I'm really dreaming.

Sorry, I just saw Inception recently and I can't help but be reminded of it over and over again when reading this thread.
