Howdy friends,
I was reading an article by James Alexander: https://confessional.org/archives/19th-century/alexander-1851-sabbath-evenings-in-former-days
He discusses that families would, in the home, go through the Westminster Shorter Catechism on Sabbath evenings. I am curious if anyone has info on this in more detail. His discussion is:
I am curious if he intends that the entire Shorter Catechism was covered (though not in a single Sabbath), or if he intends to mean that the entire Shorter Catechism was gone through on every Sabbath evening. I am inclined to think that the former is intended, but the wording is ambiguous enough that the latter was actually my first reading of it. The reference a bit later in that paragraph to "weekly repetition" and the objection of "tediousness" makes the idea that it was the entire Catechism, every week, seem more likely as well.
Does anyone have insight on this, or additional sources?

In our day of restlessness it is thought enough to despatch a few questions and answers; but the Scottish method was to go through the whole Shorter Catechism, without omission or abridgment.
